I’m new to the EV world and feeling a bit puzzled by the charging rates I’ve been experiencing. I have a 2014 Ioniq Premium with 31,000 miles, and I usually try to use 22kW public chargers. However, I’m only getting between 5kW and 6kW charge rates, which seems really low to me. It’s taking 5 hours to go from 40% to 100%. is that normal?

I’m trying to figure out if there’s something missing, or if this is just how it’s supposed to be. Any advice from more experienced EV drivers, especially if you’ve had similar experiences with charging rates would be appreciated. 😵

You are getting only between 5kW and 6kW because your car has an onboard charger with limited AC charging capacity. In this case, even if the charger is capable of delivering up to 22kW, your car's charger is limited to a lower rate, as you noticed. Another thing you should consider is that old cars batteries are more sensitive to temperature. So, it may be a thing that the car reduces the charging speeds to prevent overheating. These two things are somehow linked. I hope it helps!

Your Ioniq likely has a single-phase onboard charger, which limits AC charging to about 6.6 kW max. That’s normal for this model. For faster charging, look for DC fast chargers instead.
